Best font for a confidential or draft watermark

A watermark is read at an angle, at 20% opacity, often on a busy page or a cheap print. The font has to survive that. Decorative type does not.

Use a bold sans-serif

Helvetica Bold, Arial Bold, Calibri Bold, or Source Sans Bold. Wide, even strokes. At low opacity, thin serifs disappear and the word becomes a smudge. This site draws with Helvetica Bold because it is built into PDF viewers and does not need to embed a custom file.

Avoid

Script, Blackletter, condensed display faces, and light weights. Also avoid fonts that look like body text (Times at 12pt equivalent): the watermark should not be mistaken for a heading. All caps helps; mixed case at 20% opacity is harder to parse quickly.

Size

For a centered diagonal on A4/Letter, 72–120 pt is typical. For tiled marks, 28–40 pt. If you need a long phrase, shrink type before you shrink opacity.

Can I use my brand font?

Only if it is a sturdy sans and you embed it. This browser tool uses Helvetica Bold so every viewer renders the same way.

Does color matter more than font?

Both matter. Red sans-serif is the confidential stereotype for a reason: it reads as a warning. Gray sans-serif reads as status (draft).

Bold sans, all caps, large, faint. That combination is the whole design system.
