Confidential watermark examples
Good confidential marks are boring on purpose: one word, high contrast against the page, low opacity against the text. The examples below are patterns you can copy, not legal advice.
Classic diagonal CONFIDENTIAL
Red (#FF0000 or a darker crimson), 22% opacity, ~330° rotation, centered, 80–120 pt depending on page size. This is what most people picture. It photographs well and still lets body text be read.
Internal Use Only
Gray, slightly smaller, often tiled. Use when the file is not secret from staff but must not go to customers or the press. Longer phrases need smaller type or they wrap badly in a PDF text draw.
Highly Confidential + tiled
For data-room exports and M&A binders. Smaller type, repeat on a grid, so a single clause screenshot still shows the label. Do not combine with a second full-page DRAFT unless both are required; the page turns into fog.
Mistakes
Opacity at 80% (unreadable). Script fonts (illegible at 20%). Mark only on the cover. Yellow on a cream page. A logo so faint nobody sees it. Putting “Confidential” in the footer only — footers get cropped in slides and photos.
Tips
- Download the SVG pack if you need the same look in PowerPoint or print.
- Match RGB red across Word, PDF, and slides so the brand of “confidential” is consistent.
FAQ
Do you have a PNG with a transparent background?
Yes, on the templates page. For PDFs, vector text is sharper than a PNG overlay.
Can I put a name and date in the watermark?
Yes, as custom text, e.g. “CONFIDENTIAL — J. Smith — 2026-08-14”. Keep it short or it will clip.
Copy a simple spec and reuse it. Consistency beats a new artistic confidential mark on every file.
