How to watermark a PDF on Mac
Apple Preview is excellent for cropping and signing. It is not a watermarking app. There is no Watermark menu. The workarounds people share (a text box on one page, or a Quartz filter) are easy to get wrong. Use a dedicated tool unless you enjoy fighting Preview.

Do not open Preview looking for Watermark
The command is not there.

Use the browser editor
Drop the PDF, set text, download to Downloads.

Check every page in Preview
After download, open the new file in Preview to confirm page 1.
What Preview can and cannot do
Markup → Text adds a box you position by hand. It is opaque, not a faded diagonal, and it does not repeat across pages. You would have to copy it onto every page. That is not a watermark workflow. Preview also cannot overlay a PNG at 20% opacity as a repeating pattern without a custom Quartz filter.
Browser tool on Safari or Chrome
Open WatermarkPDF in Safari or Chrome, choose the PDF from Finder via the file picker, set DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL, download. The file never uploads. This is the path that matches “add watermark to PDF on Mac free” without installing Acrobat.
Acrobat Pro for Mac
Same as Windows: Edit PDF → Watermark. Worth it if you already pay for Creative Cloud and need image marks or page ranges.
Quartz filter (advanced, brittle)
ColorSync Utility can apply PDF filters. People build a watermark filter with an image overlay. It is undocumented for most staff, breaks on some PDFs, and is a poor default. Skip it unless you are automating a trusted internal pipeline.

Yes. Safari or Chrome is enough.
