How to watermark a PDF in Adobe Acrobat

Acrobat Pro is the full-featured way to watermark a PDF: text or image, page ranges, appearance behind or in front of content, saved presets. Acrobat Reader cannot add a watermark. If someone sent you “use Adobe Reader,” they meant Pro.

Acrobat Pro steps

Open the PDF. Tools → Edit PDF → Watermark → Add. Choose Text or File. Set font, color, rotation, opacity, and scale relative to target page. Under Page Range Options, choose All or a subset. Appear behind: on for classification marks. Save. To reuse: Watermark → Add → Saved watermark.

Reader, Express, and online Acrobat

Reader: view only. Acrobat web / Express: some edit features sit behind a login and upload the file to Adobe’s cloud. Do not use the cloud path for restricted documents unless your contract already allows Adobe storage.

Foxit, Nitro, PDF-XChange

Foxit PDF Editor and Nitro PDF Pro both have Watermark under the edit or organize menus, close to Acrobat’s model. PDF-XChange Editor is popular because the free editor can stamp headers and watermarks with fewer nags than Acrobat. All three are desktop apps; they do not require an upload. Feature names differ, but you always want: all pages, behind content, opacity under 40%.

Can I watermark in Acrobat without a subscription?

Perpetual Acrobat licenses still exist in some volume programs, but retail is subscription. This browser tool is the no-license alternative for text marks.

Does a watermark break a certified PDF?

Yes. Any content change invalidates certification. Watermark a copy.

Use Acrobat when you already pay for it and need logos or page ranges. Use this site when you only need text and cannot upload the file to Adobe’s cloud.
