What is a draft watermark?
A draft watermark is a status stamp: this version is unfinished, unofficial, or not approved. It is the document equivalent of a “WIP” sticker on a machine.
Draft is about time, not audience
CONFIDENTIAL answers “who may see this.” DRAFT answers “can you rely on this yet.” A public consultation paper can be draft. A signed NDA can be confidential and final. Mixing the words confuses reviewers.
What it looks like
Usually gray, large, diagonal, behind the text. Some teams use PRELIMINARY, WORKING COPY, or NOT FOR CIRCULATION. “Final draft” is an oxymoron in many workplaces; if it is the last internal pass, say FOR REVIEW instead of DRAFT.
Remove it on purpose
The mark should disappear when the document is issued. That means you need a clean source file. Do not flatten a draft watermark into a scan if you still expect to publish a final.
